Every week, you’ll find on our blog class notes and a summary video from our Wednesday and Sunday tango group classes.

These video and notes are meant to help our students remember what they’ve done in class.

Dimension: Directions - Theme: Giros with moving axis

In this class, we saw a very elegant giro with walking axis, e.g. a giro where the leader is moving too. This giro started with a traditional entrada to the ocho and ended with a nice grapevine.

Summary video

Intermediates: Deep ocho technique

Top tips

  • Leaders: Make sure you constantly push from the back leg to ensure the follower keeps on moving. If you try and go only with the free leg, chances are that you’ll hit her foot. The sacada happens as she transfers her weight to the front leg.
  • Followers: Make sure you complete your pivot before stepping. Pivot more than 180 degree.

Intermediates: Giro with sacadas and exit in grapevine

Top tips

  • Leaders: Make sure you pivot enough between each sacada or you’ll end up missing the sacada. At the grapevine, after stepping beyond the follower’s foot, make sure that you pivot your hips without moving your torso. If your torso moves, the follower will either fall or take a step – neither are a desired outcome!
  • Followers: Emphasise the size of the giro rather than the corners. If you immediately transfer your weight to the supporting leg, your giro will look jerky and you will easily lose your balance.

Homework

Top tips

  • Leaders: As for all giros with sacada, you need to practise the footwork on your own, making sure you keep your dissociation active during the whole giro.
  • Followers: Practise the giro on your own and emphasise the size of the giro rather than the corners. This means that you should try and feel that at each stage, you are passing by the middle, with your weight in between the two feet.

See you soon on the dancefloor,
