Every week, you’ll find on our blog class notes and a summary video from our Wednesday and Sunday tango group classes.

These video and notes are meant to help our students remember what they’ve done in class.

Theme: Wraps

Wraps are fun step where the follower's leg wraps around the leader's leg in a soft, rounder, circular motion. In this class, we saw a couple of variations, suitable for beginners & for intermediates. Perfect for slow, mellow tangos.

Beginners & Improvers: Wrap from Americana

  • Before the wrap, make sure there is contact between your hips and your partner’s hips. If there’s no contact, your partner will not have the support she needs to lean and do the wrap.
  • To lead the wrap, you need to keep a strong left arm, in order to support the follower as she does the wrap. The lead comes from creating a circular motion from the torso, which you can get by gently moving your weight to one leg and the other.
  • To enable the wrap, you need to create space, by lifting the heel of your right leg and bending your knee to let the follower’s leg wrap around yours freely.

  • Your leg needs to stay on the floor until it hits your partner’s leg. This is what makes it wrap. Try and not wrap your leg before this contact occurs, as 1- it’s not safe, 2- it looks strange.
  • Keep your foot pointed the whole time.
  • As soon as you exit the wrap, bring your foot back in contact with the floor. Having your foot on the floor before and after the wrap will create a contrast that will make the wrap stand out even more.

Intermediate: Wraps from forward ocho

  • Lead your partner to step by using your dissociation and opening your torso to the left. After she steps, place your foot next to hers. Don’t step before her or she might step on your toes! Not fun 🙁
  • As in the first wrap, use your torso and your weight / axis transfer to create a circular energy that will generate the wrap.
  • Keep your left arm strong and your hand in between you and your partner to offer her support.

  • Same as the first wrap, we keep our foot on the floor and our leg straight until we hit his tight.
  • Keep your core muscles engaged so that you don’t collapse on your partner. In this step, you might feel slightly off axis, which is normal.

See you soon on the dancefloor,
