Every week, you’ll find on our blog class notes and a summary video from our Wednesday and Sunday tango group classes.

These video and notes are meant to help our students remember what they’ve done in class.

Dimension: Directions - Theme: Pivots in milonga

In this class, we had a look at pivots in milonga, especially pivots followed with changes of weight, which are very common in milonga. We saw a couple of very classic zigzag steps, so don't miss out! Have a look at the video now and see you on the dancefloor for the next milonga tanda.

Beginners & improvers: Basic milonga steps

For the basic milonga steps, please refer to the class notes and video of our special milonga workshops on 20/09.

Intermediates: Zigzag step (movements in opposite directions)

Top tips for both leaders and followers

  • Pivot first and then pivot. Make sure you collect your feet before pivoting or you might end up with pigeon-toed feet (never a good look!)
  • Keep dissociated towards one another to maintain the connexion.

Intermediates: Zigzag step in espejo (mirroring one another)

Top tips

  • Leaders: As you step back, you need to dissociate to the left to lead her a pivot backward. Be very clear about this lead or you will end up in the first step.
  • Followers: This is the same step as before for followers, however it feels a bit different as the leader is now doing the same step as you at the same time.

Intermediates: Zigzag step with sharp pivot

Top tips for both partners

  • It is very important to maintain the extended arm in between you and not let it move one way or the other. At the pivot, if you both push toward one another, you will find that it helps you find the energy you need for the sharp pivot.
  • This is a 180-degree pivot.

Homework

Top tips for both partners

  • These steps require fast pivots and changes of weight. To practise fast pivots, play some tango music and practise forward and backward ochos on the beat, e.g. with the step and the pivot happening in one beat only. Also practise the pivots and changes of weight, making sure you don’t end up with pigeon-toed feet.

See you soon on the dancefloor,
