Every week, you’ll find on our blog class notes and a summary video from our Wednesday and Sunday tango group classes.

These video and notes are meant to help our students remember what they’ve done in class.

Dimension: Embrace - Theme: Using hinges to communicate in close embrace

In tango, we use the word dissociation to describe quite a variety of moves, which are meant either to keep the connection between partners or to make the follower step, cross, pivot... In this class, we focused on the subtle differences between each lead by using a few sequences we like.

Beginners & improvers

In this video, you’ll find a summary of the step we already covered in the beginners class, the emblematic ocho cortado.

Intermediates & up

In this class, we played with the concept of hinges and saw the differences between the ocho cortado and the americana step, as well as several exits from a simple giro.

Top tips

  • Leaders: To lead the ocho cortado, you need to use your left shoulder as the hinge of your dissociation, this will make the follower step and cross. For the americana, use her supporting leg as the hinge.
  • Followers: As we are trying to make leads more subtle, you will need to develop an awareness of what the leaders is inviting you to do by paying attention to the source of his dissociation.

Homework

Top tips

  • Beginners: Practice the cortado musicality: quick/quick/slow/quick/quick/slow.
  • Intermediates & up: Try some Research and Development of your own. Take a step you like and play with the different hinges to see what new step you can create.
